Curved Back Armchairs | Early 19th Century | Shanxi, China | Fine Chinese Antique

The construction technique of this pair of armchairs in inspired by bamboo furniture used in southern. Two pieces of wood are blended to form tow upside down U shapes. The flat top of the two upside down U shapes serve as the seat frame on the sides and two protruding side of the U serve as the legs.

Horizontal bar are inserted to the 2 U shapes using joints forming the seat frame for the front and back as well as the aprons of the seat. Double stretchers are used to strengthen the back legs.

The back rest of the chairs is made in a similar way of bending a piece of wood into a c curve with the front ends turned outward to form the armrests. The back splat is divided into 3 sections and each is decorated with carvings of auspicious symbols.
