Taizong - The Emperor who shaped the Tang Dynasty (Part 2)
An Ode to Taizong, the True Son of
Heaven


During the decline of the Tang Dynasty in the
late 9th century, Du Guangting (850-933 AD) a
respected Daoist priest and a scholar
grounded in Confucian classics and
philosophies wrote an ode called The Hero
with a Curly Beard (虬髯客傳) This ode
celebrated the greatness of Taizong and
confirmed his legacy as the True Son of
Heaven and the true founder of the Tang
Dynasty.

In the ode, Du Guangting used the charm and
unique abilities of three different heroic
figures to establish Taizong’s unalienable
position as the True Son of Heaven. The
