Taizong - The Emperor who shaped the Tang Dynasty
Page 3

The Li family came from the metropolis of
Longxi, a place where nomadic tribes and Silk
Road merchants gathered. In addition to the
dual cultural background which came about as
a result of inter-racial and inter-cultural
marriages between the Han and Xienbei tribes,
the Li family’s constant exposure and their
close proximity to different cultures and
peoples, instilled in the family a broad and
outward looking perspective. This enhanced
their ability and willingness to accept and
appreciate differences. Their appreciation
of differences, without reservation, not only
encouraged trade and acceptance of foreigners
in China but it also endeared the Li family
and their newly founded [Tang] dynasty to
their neighbours.
