This table was especially made for the playing of a string musical instrument called “qin”. The table has recessed panel legs and the spandrels are beaded and carved in the shape of a fungus. The top of the table is a piece of brick dated to the Han dynasty. It was a fashion in the Ming and Qing periods to include a piece of “archaic item” in furniture making to show the owner’s appreciation for antique. The base of the panel legs are long gone and have been replaced.
