A Sandstone sculpture of a Bodhisattva
In early Buddhism, the term “Bodhisattva” is used to refer to the Buddha before he attained supreme enlightenment; more generally, the term refers to any being destined for enlightenment or intent on enlightenment.

This particular bodhisattva is from Sichuan Province, and is made of sandstone. The facial features of this piece are characteristic of religious icons of Northern China.
