The Connoisseur - The Glorious Burial
The Chinese have a saying “Treat death as
life.” Someone who has passed away is
considered to be embarking on a great
journey. For this reason, to bid farewell to
a kinsman who has embarked on the “great
journey”, filial sons and daughters would
prepare a “glorious burial” to enable
that person to continue to enjoy a glorious
life in the next world.

In ancient China, the idea of tomb burial was
to recreate the setting that the deceased had
enjoyed during his or her lifetime. Another
goal of the tomb burial was to create an
ideal world for the deceased to enjoy after
death. In addition, as we know, objects were
placed in or near the tomb for the deceased to
enjoy in the next life. In the same way that
