I have chosen to look closely at five
different pieces in detail and examine their
form, function, carvings and decoration.

When looking at a piece of antique furniture
and trying to determine its value, (or
whether the piece is considered good or bad)
it is generally helpful to try to understand
the initial intention of the creator.

The Chinese have a saying that, in my view,
embodies the full spirit of Taoist belief.
The saying is, “void is solid and solid is
void”. There is no absolute; sweetness is
