Taizong - The Emperor who shaped the Tang Dynasty
Page 2
The Xienbei tribe gained power in Northern
China during the Three Kingdoms period
(220–280 AD) when Cao Cao of the Wei
Kingdom put them in charge of the military to
stand against the Wu and Shu kingdoms.

After Tuoba Wei established the Northern Wei
Dynasty, which lasted from 386 to 534 AD, he
began a series of sinicization programs. For
example he adopted the Han language and
culture, and encouraged marriages between the
Han and Xienbei tribes. He also placed many
Hans in important positions in the court. The
Li family, through their marriages with brides
from the Xienbei tribes, became one of the
aristocratic Han families who gained
prominence during this period of
sinicization.
