Taizong - The Emperor who shaped the Tang Dynasty
Historians believe that a significant factor
which contributed to the Tang Dynasty’s
unprecedented strength [in Chinese history]
is the multi-cultural background of the Li
family. It is therefore essential to examine
the Li family in some detail to better
understand the effect the family had in
shaping the Tang dynasty. In particular, Li
Shimen, known also as Taizong, the second
Emperor of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), was
an extremely influential and significant
character.

The history of the Li family goes back to the
4th century when Tuoba Wei unified Northern
China and established the Northern Wei
Dynasty [in 368 AD]. Tuoba belonged to one of
the most powerful clans of the Xienbei tribe.
