A pair of Bronze ox head from the Dian culture
The Dian culture existed in today’s EasternYunnan province from the Spring and Autumn period to Eastern Han period. The Dian were subjugated by the Han Dynasty under the reign of Emperor Wu of Han in 109 BC. The Han Dynasty incorporated the territory of the Dian Kingdom into the Yizhou Commandery, but left the King of Dian as the local ruler.

The Dian people are sophisticated metal workers and most of their metal work depict animals in nature. Ox is one of the most popular object of depiction.
